Recapping Project Runway? Yes and No

Some of us on the Bravissimo team ARE dissin' Project Runway. We've decided to recap the show on our respective blogs, however. To find them, here they are:

Ms. Place offers a conversation around the water cooler in which she and her coworkers either ooh and ah over the outfits or rip the designs apart.

Eric 3000 brings his own sense of fun to his recap posts, which are often more entertaining than the show itself. His observations are spot on.

Marius writes with a unique perspective about PR, but always with insight and compassion.

To my way of thinking, the best PR recap post, bar none, was written by Dan's little brother. I laughed so hard that my throat stayed sore for days.

They Are Back

Congratulations, Hung!

Hung, Casey, and Dale cooked their hearts out for the finale.
They received sterling help from Rocco Di Spirito, Michelle Bernstein, and Todd English, not to mention Sara M., Howie, and C.J.

In the end Hung made the least mistakes. Dale came close, but his lobster dish was nearly "inedible" according to Tom, and Casey's best dish was mediocre at best according to Rocco's blog. Casey had built up a huge momentum up to the finale, and this was her event to lose. It was unfortunate that she drew Howie, who apparently added the salmon roe the judges disliked, but Casey's pork bellies (who chooses pork belly for a winning dish?) was overcooked. Her performance underwhelmed the judges, so the third Top Chef crown goes to Hung.

Now it's countdown time for Project Runway. Mark your calendars: Wednesday, November 14th, 10 p.m. EST.

Veronica, dahling, can we talk?

You're tall, thin, gorgeous, witty, and smart. So, do you mind if I give you some advice? Change your hair and makeup. As Tim's sidekick in Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, you are coming across as the person who needs a makeover.

If I may suggest: Soften your hair style a bit. Right now your hair is so mannish that it clashes with some of the outfits you've worn on the show. And your lipstick is so light that one of my friends thinks you have a mustache. I don't think you do, but he swears you have one. I think your upper lip looks dark because your makeup makes you look washed out.

Now, normally I wouldn't tell a woman of your beauty and style how to look. It's none of my business what hairdo you choose or the kind of makeup you wear, but as Tim's sidekick, you are setting yourself up as a style icon.

Thanks for listening, dahling. I'm not saying you look awful; you simply don't look much better than the women you are helping.

From all the recent hype, I understand that Project Runway will be shown again in my lifetime, and perhaps during this decade. As we waited patiently, you've tossed every kind of reality series our way. Our excitement reached fever pitch with Top Design, but our adrenalin soon fizzled. We then started trilling again with Shear Genius, only to feel utterly deflated as the series was rushed to its disappointing conclusion. Frankly, I can no longer recall ALL the reality series you've scheduled since the last episode of Project Runway aired. I do know that some shows, like Hey Paula and The Housewives of Orange County, were complete drivel.

I've felt nothing but relief since the last Flipping Out episode aired. In fact, from now on I am sticking to my new resolution of watching only two Bravo shows per week at the most. I'll definitely watch Top Chef and Project Runway, but as for any new shows you might toss my way: they'd better be good or I won't watch. Take Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, which started out with such promise. It seems tired and formulaic after only three episodes. This Thursday I'll miss the show. I don't care.

I've simply had enough.

Rumbles in Tim Heaven

Well I like Tim Gunn's new show, Guide to Style, even though I am hearing a few grumbles. "I hope the show doesn't have that predictable format every week. That would be boring," said one co worker as we dissed the show around the water ooler.

"Veronica looks mannish," said someone else. Even Tom and Lorenzo would seem to agree with that assessment.

As for me, I adore the whole concept of Tim assessing a woman's look before, during, and after her transformation, trashing her wardrobe, showering her with gifts, taking her for a hair and makeup makeover, and introducing her to designer clothes. I could do without the "life coach," however. Walk the carpet in a garbage bag? Puhlease.

Not everyone is as enamored of the show as me. Frankly, it will take a whole lot of ugly and repetition for me to get bored with this pat formula - at least until Project Runway airs. Thanks for this breath of fresh air, Bravo. Love Tim. Love Veronica Webb. Adore the show. Ahhhh. Finally some relief from that Hey Paula debacle.

See Ya at The Parker, Michael Twomey

Come on in whenever you wish and work a spell. Oh, and don't forget that in the hotel world the devil is in the details. People don't pay $95 per plate to watch you make mistakes. Before watching this episode, I was all set to dislike Peggy Bilous (what an apropos name), CEO of Desert Cancer Foundation and the woman who accidentally smacked Andrea in the schnoz. She was actually well behaved under the circumstances, because had I been placed in a similar situation I would have found a machete and gone after you. One hopes that her Foundation made a ton of money off this fundraiser, because you did everything you could, Michael, to subvert the event.

Question: Who waltzes in 3 hours late on the day of an important event and keeps his job?
Answer: No one.

Top Chef 3 Crawls Along at a Snail’s Pace, While Bravo Pushes Welcome to the Parker Out the Door

This Wednesday, Top Chef fans are forced into enduring another hiatus and watching another nonsensical repeat of the all stars episode. Here's what I think about that.

To add insult to injury Bravo isn’t even trying to cobble together a “What are they doing now?” show, or a reunion show of all the chefs ousted in the first two episodes. Pouring salt into the viewers’ wounds, they scheduled this blank moment after back to back Restaurant Challenges that already had slowed momentum to a crawl. (C’mon, fess up folks, which of you didn’t know Tre was going? The clues were HUGE, with Tom portending that it doesn’t matter how great your past performances were, it’s the last performance that counts!) And for those of you who are into Sara bashing, just remember Ms. Place’s kind remarks about her all along in her comments on other blogs as well as her own. Girlfriend’s been working under the radar, garnering solid reviews and pleasing the diners. BOOM! Now she’s won an elimination challenge and quickfire challenge. She reminds me of a charcoal fire that simmers for a long time before it bursts into flame.

But Tre amd Sara are not the point. Here’s Bravo’s juggernaut hit Top Chef (outgunned only by Project Runway) inching painfully along, while Welcome to the Parker is already staring at its finale. Just when I get comfortable with this quirky but well done show, I’ll have the rug pulled from under me after only six shows. Why? Will Flipping Out also enjoy a similarly short run?

What is Bravo doing? There have been so many new Bravo reality shows this season that I can’t keep them all straight. In addition, these shows have had to compete with American Idol, Dancing Under the Stars, America’s Got Talent, Big Brother, and the current Design Star. It’s hard to remember the who, what, where, when, and why.

Hey Paula deserved its short run. In fact, the show should have been pulled after the first episode, but I could have watched more of Life on the D-List, Work Out, Shear Genius, and Top Design. Those shows, along with Welcome to the Parker are being rushed so quickly that they're gone before a viewer can really get invested in them.
Here are a few of my suggestions for scheduling future reality shows, Bravo:

Air only two new reality shows at a time.
Give all of them a minimum of an 8-week run.
Keep reunion shows and hiatuses to a maximum of one per show.
Keep elimination of two contestants in one show to a minimum.
Do what Idol does (and what you're doing with Project Runway), and let us get to know all the contestants in the first show; don't begin eliminations until the second episode.
Keep the judges in the background and let the contestants shine (you generally do this very well, but you failed miserably with Top Design.)
Keep covering those poignant moments so well, as with Doug Blasdell's and Patrick Griffin's deaths.
DON'T schedule another hiatus for Top Chef 3.
DON'T ever show another Hey Paula ever again. Don't even think about repeats.
Toss those Orange County Housewives on their well massaged rears and cancel those repeats.Thanks for listening, Ms. Place.

Dahlings, not to put too fine a point on it, but how assholic are some of the guests of The Parker? PUHLAY ping pong on a high maintenance manicured lawn? Ride a tricycle in a room filled with fine furniture? Drink and puke all night long? Create a hundred amuse bouches for some pseudo dingbat food critics?
Have Jonathan Adler request a fluff maiden to fluff pillows, drapes, and what nots? PUHLEASE spare me.

The only sane creature in this show has been Winston, Jonathan's kewpie dog.

These quirks make for fine television. My take on The Parker? Stay tuned. You're in for a bumpy ride.

Workout: Chatting With Jesse

Wow first Brian, then Rebecca and now Jesse has drop by the blog to chat with us. Welcome to Bravissimo Jesse!

Us: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Jesse: Um, let's see... I'm 27, born on June 19, 1980- which puts me on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer. I am originally from Seattle, WA and am the middle child of three (though, it should be noted I now have a baby brother who is 5). I am very close to my family and I speak to my Grandma Jean at least once a week.

I have an endless love for my best friend Jasmine and my dog Sammy. My celebrity favorites are Oprah, Martha Stewart, and Mariah Carey (if that doesn't make me QUITE gay then I don't know what does). I love cooking for my friends and family- I think that is a result of having a Southern mother who always cooks for everyone.

Um, I could go on and on... but let's see what your questions have in store and I will give you more if I feel like we haven't covered all the bases!

Us:Why did you decide to become a trainer?
Jesse: Became a trainer when I enrolled in culinary school- simply because I didn't want to gain a TON of weight!

Us: Were you working at SkySport&Spa when Bravo came calling?
Jesse: No- I was a new hire... I was actually the only trainer hired ON-camera.

Flipped over Flipping Out: Or OCD in the OC

Jeff Lewis has to be one of the most unique bosses in America, yet his absolutely nutty relationship with his staff makes for great television. No detail goes unnoticed with this confessed OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) fanatic while few details are attended to by his largely lazy staff. Here's a photo of Jeff and staff praying for feng shui. I kid you not.

Jeff is a talented and successful house flipper with a knack for turning properties around. Aside from thinking the universe revolves around him, he loves to make lists. He should love mine.

List One:

Watch show
Take notes
Observe carefully the interplay between Jeff and his henchmen - Jeff right, henchmen wrong
Observe Jeff doing all the work
Observe Jeff obsessing about minutia that don't mean a hill of beans
Observe Jeff imposing perfect geometric and spacial order in his physical universe
Observe Jeff unsuccessfully imposing order in the minds of his assistants
Watch assistants generally do what they want to do any way
Watch assistants perform the easier tasks to keep their jobs
Watch yet another reality t.v. personality enjoy a close relationship with paid staff, with no significant other or family in sight
Remind oneself not to recoil when one sees a throwaway property sell for $800,000
Keep laughing as Jeff seeks out psychics and relieves his stress by shouting into a pillow
Watch some amazing renovations
Ask Bravo why Zoila the maid doesn't have her own show
Make note of when the next show airs

Here's Jeff with Jen, the executive assistant who minces no words with him. She calls him a genius behind his back and speaks her mind to his face, such as calling the Commonwealth property a TD (total dump.)

Click here for videos of Brant getting fired for parking his car and talking on his cell phone while on the job. This spat is as petty as two 13 year olds disagreeing over a song choice.

Stephen, first house assistant, scoops dog poop, runs errands, and makes sure all Jeff's water bottles face outward in the frig. I'm sure the labels must be arranged exactly as well. As Jeff says, he's found the perfect vocation for his OCD. "I found a business that validates and celebrates my disorder." Right on, bro. Keep on movin' on.

Redecorating: Hey Paula Style

Did any of you enter the la la land that is 'Hey Paula' last Thursday?
Here's Bravo’s official synopsis of Episode Six:

Paula plans to rent a house while her home is being remodeled and asks her best friend/hairstylist Daniel to help her decorate. Daniel tours the rental house with Deb the interior designer to determine décor. Daniel and Deb make decorative executive decisions, and move in new furniture the very next week. But when Paula arrives to look at the house, she hates it and calls Deb to complain. After reconsidering, Paula decides to hold off on remodeling her house, and lets go of the newly decorated rental house.

Let's consider the version I saw, shall we?
Paula plans to rent a house while her home is being remodeled. She asks her best friend/hairstylist Daniel to help her decorate, explaining how she likes a unique and eclectic décor. Daniel, thinking he can work with someone whose consideration of others is that of a newt, takes on the task.

He and a nice interior designer, Deb, walk through a luxurious rental house discussing Paula's wishes. They wait for Paula, who is late. In fact, Paula is shopping for jewelry with friends. Recalling the pesky detail that she's made an appointment to walk through the house and provide input she calls Daniel to say she'll be late.

How late, asks Deb, who has her own busy schedule, and who lets Daniel know she must leave at four. Daniel reassures Deb that Paula will honor her commitment. Deb, who seems normal, believes him.The viewer is now treated to an uber awkward version of Waiting for Godot, in which Deb swallows her pride and waits alongside Paula's stooge because this assignment could lead to other bigger assignments if she plays her cards right.

Only Deb doesn't realize that Paula isn't playing with a full responsibility deck.

When it becomes painfully apparent that Paula isn't coming, Daniel tours the rental house with Deb to determine décor. Rather than bother Paula with iddy biddy details like how and where she wants the furniture, Daniel and Deb make decorative executive decisions, and move in new furniture the very next week.

The camera then pans through a nice looking house with Deb saying that she did her best and thinks/hopes that Paula will like the house. Deb is still nursing a hope in her breast that she will meet Paula. At this point my regard for Deb - who has been ignored and stepped on by Paula on several occasions - goes down a few notches.

The Loony Tunes theme song starts up and canned laughter is heard in the background. The viewer is made to understand that Deb's dreams of meeting the singer are being flushed down the toilet.

After Deb leaves, Paula arrives to look at the house. Seeing the tasteful, restrained decor she has a melt down.
Paula walks through the house shaking her head and muttering, then inexplicably demands that Daniel help her drag a birdcage from its unobtrusive position in a corner, saying in effect, Anyone who knows me should know I hate bird cages. Uh, Paula, Deb never met you. How would she know?

Paula nearly tosses her cookies when she sees the gleaming white and chrome bathroom with state of the art glassed-in shower and sunken tub. She calls Deb to complain, saying that even though they've never met and even though Deb has never received direct input from her, Deb should have known instinctively what was in Paula's heart and misunderstood soul. Daniel begins to understand that perhaps he couldn't read his friend's mind after all.

Paula continued to spew her thoughts and bemoan the fact that no one understood her and how she needed ... blah ... blah ... blah .... blah.

I turned the channel off.

Kathy Griffin: D-List Finale

So why does Kathy Griffith fail to make me smile as much as she used to? I still laugh, but not as loud. Is it that her shtick is getting old? Could it be that she has played the D-List card too long? How many times can we watch her try to out do Oprah? Or charm gays from another country? Or date celebrities who are almost recognizable? Or try to get the paparazzi to take photos of her? When is a joke worn and old? Like, right now.

The final scenes of the final show when Kathy and her assistants tossed her father's ashes in the Irish wind were touching, and (unlike Paula) there is true camaraderie between her and her three assistants. The affection is obvious. ("All the love and friendship money can buy."Hah!)

But how D-List is Kathy these days? She’s recognized by all the gays of America and quite a few straight folks; she lives in a fabulous hillside house; and she earns enough to pay a contingent of people – assistants and agent I presume, and a cut of the take with her booking people, not to mention a percentage to the clubs and venues she’s appeared in. If the flight, hotel room, limo, and meals are included on top of Kathy's appearance fee, she must be doing quite well. Witness her lovely and exclusive hilltop home.

Does all the activity I just described sound like those of a D-lister to you? Former child actress Maureen McCormick (Marcia Brady) is a D-Lister. Kathy is not.

So, my suggestion to Bravo for the next Kathy Griffin go round is to take Kathy off the D List and change the direction of the show. Otherwise there will be a lot more viewers like me the next season – tired of the same old shtick.

Kathy vs Paula

We've had an opportunity for quite a few weeks to watch Kathy Griffin and Paula Abdul star in their very own Bravo shows. Kathy is with us for the third time. This season we have seen her reaction towards her divorce, the death of her father, and the incarcerated. The lady is funny, complex, straight forward, and a consummate professional (although frequently late.)

People either like Kathy or they don't, but when they do they love her. Jim, a coworker, can quote her funniest lines. He and I review each show with a fine tooth comb, laughing hysterically all over again. Only Kathy can get away with saying 'fisting' in front of a bunch of hardened criminals and get them to howl with laughter. Her friendship with her gays is wonderful to witness, and, even though she purports to dislike children, her performance for her nephew's classmates was designed to make him proud. And it did. One knows with an aunt like Kathy he will always get the girl.
Paula, who is joining the Bravo stable for the first time in the hope of boosting her popular American Idol image, enjoys no such adoration among my office companions. While an entire group of people discussed Idol when it aired, no one discusses Paula without making a face. 'Hey Paula' points out the reasons why: The woman is totally self-absorbed, lacks a sense of humor, is always late and moaning about lack of sleep, and she's downright surly at times. In fact, there are moments when Paula seems scarily certifiable. In telling my friend Jim that I watch 'Hey Paula', I had to clarify, 'For Bravissimo, of course.'

To point out the differences between the two women, I've created a little chart.

I think my comparison points out why Kathy is liked so much. She's confident of her talent but not her looks, which adds a sense of vulnerability. Her sense of humor saves her over and over again, and she has genuine empathy for others. Paula's show is one long series of whining, moaning, and me, myself, and I. Oh, Paula. How could you willingly have placed yourself in a bad light like this? I'm sure you are the fine, talented, and compassionate person you claim to be, but don't you see how you are coming across?

The judges trashed Goil's hanging floral arragement because they thought bugs or whatever falling into their plates was unappetizing.
I think that I would rather take my chances with Goil's design.

(Why the hell would you let your freakin mutts on the bed in the first place when you have Boo-Q bucks worth of jewels spread out?)#2. Don't appear on television when you haven't slept or had a decent meal in 3-4 days.
(It's her story and she's sticking to it.)
#3. Have a strong work ethic.
(Apparently nobody works as hard as she does.)
#4. Beware of how you manage your time.
(In other words, be late for everything.)
(Tim Gunn had to wait on her slow ass!)

#5. This is the most important lesson of all.....
Travel in comfort.
(For God's sake, don't forget the damn sweats and white sneakers!)

Missed Hey Paula? We Didn't

Paula, Paula, Paula

We need to chat girlfriend. Slow down long enough for me to speak… OK I will just walk at a really fast pace to keep up with you.

Now your team of little elves must be fine people, but you all need some help. Not to fret. We, here at Bravissimo, will help you. You need us on your team.

Here are the first four minutes of the first episode. Our Paula thinks of herself as an ordinary girl. Mmmm. Ms. Place thinks perhaps not. How many of us are surrounded by assistants and publicity people? Here are another few minutes.

First, we will start with Damselfly. Put her in charge of all these assistants. She has experience here and she will snap them into order. She will have them working like a well oiled machine. Your days of not having what you need to board a plane... a thing of the past. Trust me on this one. She is the lady for this job.

Next, Eric 3000 must take over your speech writing. Have you caught his writing? Honey, he will take you past the A list. You think you are funny now. Oh sweetheart, they will begin a whole new list just for you.

As for Simon, well the Ho in Mo can handle him. You will love it. He will actually be speechless with her. I know… a dream of yours. Can you just see him standing there dumbfounded.

Now Brillke, she will do the driving. Your days of being late to any event will be a thing of the past. Hell, New York traffic will not be an issue for her. She also grills a mean cheeseburger, so she has you covered there too.

OK that takes care of your team. Now for you personally, we have the wonderful Ms. Place. She is going to see that you get the much needed rest that you need. This will give you a person that you can chat with on your level. You will be BFF. Trust me.

Now Laz is out on sabbatical for the time being, but again, trust me... he's on the team.

As for me, I’ve got your back. I’ll just keep an eye on you and let you know where else we can help.

So anyway, it seems this season is mainly about dating and trying to find Kathy a suitable partener.....This week we focused on two types...

Our favorite carpenter, Ed Schoen, from Top Design touch base with us over the weekend. Many of you will recall that Ed was the winning carpenter during the finally episode of TD. We are thrilled to learn what is happening with Ed today.

I did shoot an HGTV commentary that will air this fall on HGTV called "25 Renovation Mistakes".
Also I am being considered for a hosting job. It is still in its early stages, but I will keep you updated. The show will be america's funniest videos meets home renovations. Still not sure if they will bring the show back.

Kathy Griffin’s Most D-Listable Moments

Watching Kathy's parents it's clear where she got her sense of humor. As a team, few could beat them in sheer fun and outrageousness. To me the highlights of the show were when Kathy visited her parents or talked about them in her show.

And now one half of the team is gone. Although there were quite a few memorable D-Listable moments, I'm describing only a few this week. This post, along with Damselfly's below, is meant to be a tribute to John Patrick Griffin, whose death in February of congestive heart failure was the theme of the third episode.

1. Kathy's last talk with her father. Both sensed an urgency in the situation, and when he told her he loved her and was proud of her, Kathy knew that he was trying to get important things said and that this might be one of the last times she would be able to speak to him. Her emotions were raw and genuine, and a bit painful to watch because we knew her instincts were right.

2. Kathy's description of her father's last moments after he asked that the breathing tube be removed. He died swiftly and peacefully watching golf, his favorite sport.

3. Kathy's first comic performance after her father's death illustrated her strength. Unsure of whether to mention his passing to the crowd, she started the show off with a tribute. The crowd was with her all the way, and she emerged feeling a little better.

Kathy wrote on her blog, "I asked my Mom if it was difficult for her to watch the show, and she said in her inimitable way, “Oh for Christ’s sake, no Kathleen. I love watching it, because I get to see Johnny again.”"

Oh, Johnny, you might have lived until 90 years of age, but we hardly knew ye.

Hey Paula is Coming to Bravo on June 28th

Did you think Paula Abdul was just an American Idol hack? Wrong. Her name conjures up shoulder pads, scrunchies and the big hair of the eighties. You can see all three in the Rush Rush video with a very young, wet-behind-the-ears Keanu Reeves.

Then witness her performance singing her hit, straight Up, in 1988.

Watching it you are reminded that our Ms. Paula was The Jackson family's choreographer, and that her dance moves were revolutionary for the era. Simon Cowell might make fun of her on American Idol, and her voice might be weak, but there's surprising heft behind that sweet personality.

"Her father, John Patrick Griffin, worked in an electronics store and her mother, Maggie, assisted in a hospital's administrative office. Kathy is the youngest of three boys and two girls.

Her parents retired to California after Griffin graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1978. At the time of her father's death in 2007 her parents had been married for 65 years....[He] died in Los Angeles from congestive heart failure and multiple myeloma.

He had appeared on Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List many times, as well as four episodes of Suddenly Susan and a number of commercials.

In addition to Kathy Griffin, he was survived by his widow, three children and two grandchildren."

In Episode Two, Kathy's most D-Listable moments are few and far between. Let's just say that Mom and Dad head the list once again.

1. Have You Thought of a Gay Guy?

Mom and Dad are giving their darling daughter dating advice whilst clinking their glasses of wine. Dad is 90 years young. What a hoot. The man is in and out of the hospital, but he hasn't given up LIVING. So who do they think is perfect for our intrepid Kathy?

Sean Hannity.

I pee in my pants laughing. Kathy replies, "Oh, put a gun to my head: I would commit suicide."

Then they ask, "Have you thought of a gay guy?"

"Yes," says Kathy, "I could be Mrs. Aiken. I’m just going to f-ck around. I'm banging a new guy every night."

To which Mom replies ever so sweetly, "I'm glad our friends don't have cable."

ROFL! If I talked to my parents the way Kathy does, they would effin' kill me.

2. The False Back Street Boys Date

Nick Carter is a cute guy in a hefty sort of way. I don't know why he and his publicist agreed to this ridiculous date. Like Damselfly I think that the set up seems stiff and hokie. BUT. There was a genuine moment.
When Kathy refused to slip Nicky her tongue at the end of the evening, our Lothario's feelings seemed genuinely hurt. That was not an artificial moment. He looked into the camera bewildered.

"I was going for the kiss and then she gave me the cheek. That totally sucks man."

I feel for you, boyfriend. But I think you will find solace in the millions you made off those tepid recordings.

And sadly, folks, those were the only D-Listable moments I found in this week's show. It was funny and meh at the same time. Tom, the Whipping Boy's turn as a waiter in the Texas Coral, just wasn't funny enough to describe in detail. Let's hope Episode Three is better. But we think we know what is coming, and I dread having to sit with Kathy in the hospital waiting for a verdict on her dad.

...that Kathy's show emphasizes putting her is awkward situations? I guess that's a BIG "DUH" (with a D) to me. The first 2 seasons maybe I was a bit ignorant that maybe she was doing it unpurpose or maybe they were better at it not being "shticky"...but this season is really more obviously scheduled for that. Take last night there were numerous times that I felt uncomfortable for her or the people around her...I'll give you 2:

Was this really a date? And she does know that Paris "tapped that", right?

And when she's not being tortured...she's doing the torturing.

Any one object?

Stephen Asprinio earns all my fingers as outstanding and most entertaining Chef. He not only won the quickfire challenge with his perfect omelet, but he led his team to victory with his usual brand of humility. In fact, I decided to ask him a few questions, which I borrowed from James Lipton. I'm sure Mr. Lipton won't mind.
Lady Finger: Hi Stephen, It was nice to watch you in action again.
Stephen: Thank you.
Lady Finger: You seemed less full of yourself. More grown up! In fact you were a team player. I was a bit surprised.
Stephen: Thank you for noticing. I’ve been working on my hubris, trying to tamp it down a bit. I don’t want to turn people off as I follow my bliss as the world’s foremost chef.
Lady Finger: Coughs. Well, do you mind answering just a few questions?
Stephen: No, not at all.

1. "What is your favorite word?” Stephen
2. "What is your least favorite word?"Thunderbird. As in wine.
3. "What turns you on?" My face in the mirror.
4. "What turns you off?" Not being recognized as the greatest chef walking on the face of this earth.
5. "What sound do you love?" My own voice.
6. "What sound or noise do you hate?" The sound of picking up my knives to go.
7. "What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?" Top Chef judge. I know flavor profiles. I know ingredients. I know wine. I know plating. I know cooking. I know about running a restaurant. I simply … know.

Top Chef Makeover

In choosing Kathy’s most D-Listable moments I used the following criteria: they had to be delicious, delightful, outrageous, and unforgettable ... not necessarily in that order. Ms. Place

1. Mom and Dad at Rage

Kathy’s mother and father are the true stars of this show. Not only are they funny as hell; they openly love to drink. When Dad revealed that the wine at Rage cost only four bucks, Kathy’s ears pricked up. "Rage? "she asks. "The gay bar?" "Well, yes," Mom answers matter of factly. "Their hors d’oeuvres are only 3 bucks." God bless these people for being so spontaneously funny. Sadly we learn that Dad has not been feeling well and that he’s been in and out of the hospital. We already know that he died and this knowledge makes these scenes all the more precious.

2. Outing Trent, the Hetero Hair Hunk

Trent is good looking in a Johnny Carson sort of way and so unflappable that he became Kathy’s perfect foil. When Kathy announced, “Trent, you should know, I’m your Bitch,” he barely flinched. Then she followed up with, “94% of guys are secretly gay. How many guys have you blown?” Trent simply sat upright. He did not react when she demanded “F-ck me right now!” which confirmed her suspicions. But when he admitted he didn’t know who Fergie and Jennifer Hudson were, Kathy reluctantly concluded, "He's straight!"

Food Show Score Card: Week One

Bravo's Top Chef 4 Star All Stars Smack Down.
Watch the entire episode here if you've missed it.

My score card for week one is:

Bravo's All Stars Smack Down (Prelude to Top Chef 3): A
Fox's Hell's Kitchen: B
Food Network's Next Food Network Star: C

So why is Bravo the winner? While Hell's Kitchen offers the best prize for the winning chef (as head of their own restaurant, no waiting as Harold Dieterle has had to do), there was very little emphasis placed on the food that was being cooked. The viewer spent the majority of time watching the chefs quake under Gordon Ramsey's verbal abuse.

As for the Next Food Network Star, it was clear that the judges were looking for on-air personalities, not necessarily the best chefs. In fact, some of these chefs are barely qualified to work in my home kitchen!

Bravo, on the other hand, places the emphasis where it belongs: on the heat of the competition and the personalities of the chefs. The Smack Down was sheer fun, even though 90% of us had already guessed the ending. Plus Bravo knows how to support its fans, placing meaty material on their website almost as soon as the show has aired.

D-List: Did Anyone Else Notice...

Last night as I was watching Kathy, I noticed something funny. Not funny haha...Funny weird or even coincidental. In the comments of our previous post Madam Ovary said...

"Is it me or does Elizabeth already hate Kathy? I think I saw cold hatred whenever she looked at her."

Now if you were watching last night you got a chance to see Kathy backstage during one of her visits to the show. I couldn't get the picture so I had to recreate the situation...

Just before Rosie enters, Kathy is in the make-up room asking to use a chair. There is someone in the background being worked on with a blurred out face. Then the camera turns and you see Joy sitting on the other side of the room getting her make-up done. Well, at first I thought it might have been a guest but...no...the "burry" person is wearing a very distinct black and white striped shirt and when they show actual footage of that episode of The View whose wearing the shirt?... Elisabeth H! So, what does that mean:

-Elisabeth didn't want to be on Kathy's show more than necessary.
or
-Kathy didn't want to give Elisabeth any more air time.

Hmmmmmm.......?

Ms. Place: Don't get me wrong, dahling. Bravo loves your honesty. The brass ROFL whenever you dis the famous, but they’ve got their own future to consider. Lots of mouths to feed, and all.

Shear Genius Finale: the three stylists you will meet in heaven!

Eight episodes? Really? That's it? I thought there would be at least one more. I thought this episode would narrow it down to the final two, who would compete in the finale next week. I should probably pay more attention.

We start the episode with the three final geniuses sitting with Rene. It looks like Rene should be interviewing them but he is really just telling them what has happened on the show:

Rene: "Hi hi! First you all came on the show and then you cut some hair and people got into arguments and you all cried like little girls and some people were sent home and a bunch of other stuff happened and now we are just left with the three of you!"

Geniuses: "We know all that, Rene. We were there."

Rene: "OK, Mr. and Mrs. Smartypantses, why don't you give us a sound bite."

Anthony: "I have 43 years of experience in the styling industry. And that's pretty impressive because I'm only 39."

Daisy: "At the beginning I was completely misunderestimated."

Ben: "Making it this far on the show is really an accomplishment. But I don't care about all that shit; I'm just in it for the money."

The geniuses learn that they will recreating a Vidal Sassoon style made famous by Olympic silver medalist and hair legend Michelle Kwan. Then they are introduced to the guest judge: God.

Shear Genius: That Looks Familiar...

Here we are, all you hair fans...at the end. I cannot say that I'm surprised. Maybe what surprised me most about the final episode was how unsurprising it really was. This was definately a show that came in with a BANG! and left with a wimper...But to stay I was consistant here is my final "That Looks Familiar..." post of the season.

The stylists were suppose to create a story with their three models as well as working the Vidal "Kwan Cut" into one of their styles. They had their own ideas about their individual stories...here are mine:

Mod Movement or not I just like to call this series "Wilson Philips: Come back in progress"

While Ben saw these styles as Inner to Outer Beauty, I saw them as "The Evolution of Rene Zellweger". Maybe he was inspired by Rene Fris' presence.

Daisy was looking for the "S" curve as I was singing movie showtunes in my head. This is the The True Hollywood Story of the "Movie Musical".

Fabulous, Ben! You won number two position! Dahling, I rather liked your hairdos most. Well, at least from the front. The embryo 'do' kind of fell flat from the back.

Daisy, you acquitted yourself well. We wish you luck, girlfriend. You were a capable, sometimes inspired performer all through the show, and we love your sparkling personality. But you did not finish your third look tonight.

Some of you think that Daisy is just too obvious a choice, but you voted for her nevertheless. Ben and Anthony ran neck to neck, with Ben usually ahead by a nose. It seems that this competition is Daisy's to win or lose. The judges have already demonstrated a lot of Daisy love in their votes, and she seems to be a shoe in. Of course, we all know that BRAVO always has a few tricks up its sleeve, so stay tuned and find out tomorrow who our SHEAR GENIUS winner will be.

Not only did she win fan fave, but the overwhelming majority feel that she can do no wrong and that SHE could have saved herself if she'd just stopped obsessing about Tyson. As for Tyson? My gut tells me Daisy will win. But, hey, I've been wrong before! So I decided to go the "scientific route."

I've tallied up the scores for Daisy, Ben, and Anthony, assigning points for wins and standings. (Go to Wikipedia to view the chart I used. ) I gave 5 points for winning the elimination challenge, 4 points for placing high in the elimination challenge, etc, and came up with the following scores.
Daisy - 24 points (on the strength of two wins and four placements in the top group)

Anthony - 18 points (on the strength of one short cut win and two hight placements in the elimination challenge.)

Ben - 13 points (on the strength of being neither in the top or the bottom on three occasions, and placing high in an elimination challenge.

I do realize these posts are getting more and more boring because really I'm running out of inspiration and let's face it, there hasn't been as fun a challenge as the first one.

Anyway, since it was a photo shoot I thought we should see how succesful each of those hair-dos were when they were used in previous photo shoots...

This hair style was definatly better laying down than sitting up...the true definition of "bed-head" or "JBF hair"!

One word...ROCKIN'! Actually this calls for one for each...soo...ROCKIN', ROCKIN'!

I'm not a big Kelly Monaco fan...in fact, I'm waiting for them to kill her off my soap...but the look is...well...comparative.

What can I say...it screamed Beyonce.

Daisy's hair was WET, WET, WET!! And her Sex Kitten look won her the competition. During a lull in judging, Sally said, "No nasty, no sex kitten, no wet look or strange men in strange places.!" Ms. Place saw this and disagreed with Sally. Yowsa!

Don't cry for me, Benjalina. Your vertical hair stood UP to the test.

Ok...there was definatly and audible "gasp" around the world last night as Tyson and Tabatha's hair walked down the cat walk ...bad! bad! bad!....that was all I could say. Very unexpected from them, but I guess the curse remains: wall of fame = elimination.

When I worked in a bridal salon one thing was clear...most brides end up looking like their wedding cakes. And as I watched last night it really did strike me that most bridal hair is modeled after bake goods...or is it visa versa?...maybe I'm just jonesing the carbs I'm trying not to eat...

Krispy Creme should do a "linked donut"...I think it would be a big hit. On a side note...I think all MOB's hair ends up looking like this. I know they tried to do this to my mom.

I gave up chocolate over a year ago...please indulge me as I drool. Dr. B., what is with that 80's side "thing"?...you made her look younger because you took her back in time.

Case in point, these styles were the hardest to match with a pastry...therefore, the worst looks...hmmmm?....

Workout: Final Word

It may have just been me but Jackie seemed a bit stand-offish last night...not just with Andy but with her trainers also. Even when they were talking about the loss of Doug and everyone else was crying, she came across as removed. This has been a tough season on all fronts: loss of friends, family struggles, loss of relationships, business ventures going poorly...and an odd dating situation. Definatly not as "light" as last season...I wonder if there'll be a next season?
